Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of rheumatic disease. It affects middle-age and older people. It is characterized by increasing damage to the joint cartilage. This includes fluid accumulation, bony overgrowth, and loosening and weakness of muscles and tendons. The knees, hips and spine are commonly afflicted. Some patients may develop enlarged finger joints that might restrict use. Morning stiffness ordinarily accompanies joint involvement. Osteoarthritis onset is ordinarily slow and symptoms worsen with time. The symptoms include:

bone spurs joint stiffness
grating sensation with joint use joint swelling
joint pain loss of flexibility

Discussion: Many physicians act as though osteoarthritis is a wear and tear disease, and nothing can be done about it except make the patient more comfortable by prescribing NSAIDs (non steroid anti-inflammatory drugs). They prescribe for tolerability and believe the efficacy is about the same for each NSAID. They are likely to think that joint replacement is inevitable as a joint pain becomes unbearable. With a touch of illogical logic, some believe osteoarthritis is not an inflammatory disease, yet prescribe anti-inflammatory medicines for it. The rapid, near total relief of osteoarthritis symptoms using Microdose Therapy for five of six changes the scenario to a more positive outlook.

On rank ordering medical treatments

Patient global assessment measured in clinical trials, that is, patient’s opinion of success, is used herein to rank order medical treatment effectiveness. Virtually all clinical trials evaluate patient global assessment, and the objective of medical treatment is patient satisfaction. Comparing medical treatments with each other using other measurements is complicated because there is no one commonly acceptable measurement that represents each rheumatic disease, and rheumatic disease laboratory tests are nonspecific. The companies sponsoring the clinical trials provided clinical trial data to make this rank ordering possible.
