There’s a good chance that you or someone you know has arthritis. After all, about 1 in 4 adults in the U.S. have it! Now here’s the question most people ask: “Can you control some risk factors to avoid getting arthritis?” The answer is yes and no.
Controllable Arthritis Risk Factors
What are some risk factors for arthritis that you can control? Weight plays a major role. Those who are overweight or obese end up putting more stress on their joints– especially around the hips and knees. If possible, someone who’s overweight or obese should try and lose weight so they obtain and maintain a healthy weight. This can be done by eating nutritious foods and exercising regularly. What about joint injuries? If you are in a job where you have to overuse certain body parts– such as bending your knees all day– that repetitive stress can damage joints and lead to things such as osteoarthritis. You could try doing exercises for problematic joints for some relief, and/or change jobs. Then there’s the risk of joint infections thanks to bacteria or viruses. If you notice your joints are swollen, warm or red, you might have an infection and you should see your doctor for relief. Finally, if you smoke, that increases your risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis. See what you can do to stop smoking.
Uncontrollable Arthritis Risk Factors
What are some risk factors for arthritis that you cannot control? Age plays a major role. The older you get, the more likely you could develop arthritis. There’s also a greater risk for women than men. And then there’s the issue of genetics: you might be born with genes that put you at risk for developing certain types of arthritis.
