Nearly 28 million people in the United States have asthma. It’s common. Are you one of those people or do you know someone who struggles with asthma? The condition involves inflamed airways that makes it hard to breathe. Specifically, airways narrow and swell and may produce extra mucus. Asthmatics may experience coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath. For some people, it’s a minor problem and for others it could be life-threatening. While it can’t be cured, asthma symptoms can be somewhat controlled.
Examples of Asthma Triggers
Various “triggers” that cause asthma can include allergies, air pollution, respiratory infections, weather, and some medicines.
Many people have allergies which can lead to allergic asthma. They can be allergic to a variety of things, including dust mites, cockroaches, pollen, molds, animals (and their dander) and, specifically, rodents.
Air pollution can cause asthma– from cigarette smoke to smog, wood fires to chemicals in the air and then some… Even strong fumes coming from someone’s perfume or a scented soap can trigger asthma, not to mention the fumes of paint or gasoline.
Sometimes asthma is paired up with other problems a person might have, such as sleep apnea, obesity, nasal polyps, COPD, GERD, the flu and more.
Weather changes can cause asthma– going from dry to wet conditions, or hot to cold or vice versa. Sometimes thunderstorms, which bring high pollen and humidity, can trigger asthma.
Even some medicines such as beta blockers, aspirin and NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) can trigger asthma or cause it to worsen.
