If you experience migraines, you know one thing: you wish you didn’t! What are some tips for preventing migraine headaches?
Dark Room
When you feel a migraine coming on, that’s when it’s time to stop what you’re doing and take some key steps… First, get to a dark, quiet place so you’re not dealing with lots of lights and noises. Next, apply a hot or cold pack to your head (or neck) which can help dull the pain and/or relax the muscles. If you can take a warm shower, do so. Then, and this might sound counterintuitive, sip a little bit of a caffeinated drink. This can actually relieve some migraine pain early on.
Sound Night of Sleep
Do you sleep well? Those who get a poor night’s sleep often experience more migraines than those who get a good night’s sleep. When you’re getting ready for bed, eliminate distractions around you, such as looking at your smartphone, watching TV, listening to a blaring political radio talk show, etc. Unwind and relax in a way you like to, such as a warm bath or listening to gentle music like Enya.
Get Into a Routine
Also important? Establish a routine of certain regular sleep hours so your body gets used to the schedule, and stick to it. For instance, go to bed at 9 every night and wake up every morning at 7. Avoid daytime naps since they can interfere with nighttime sleep.
Get in Shape and Manage Stress
Then there’s the tried-and-true way to be healthier, lose some weight and reduce migraines– eat wisely and exercise. Avoid skipping meals. Write down any foods (in a food/meal journal) that seem to trigger migraines and then avoid those foods. Try to eat meals at the same time each day. And as for exercise, get some. The less obese you are, the less likely you are to get bad headaches.
Finally, to help prevent migraines, manage stress. Simplify your life, manage your time wisely, take breaks when you need to, cultivate a positive, can-do attitude, and take time to enjoy everyday life.
